First Time Surfing? No Worries.

The first time in the sea with a surfboard can be quite daunting but don’t worry our instructors will guide you every step of the way.

We take time on the beach to run through everything you need to know, ready for when you hit the water.

Everyone wants to stand up straight away but the most important thing is learning how to catch a wave and ride it to the beach – the best way to learn is to start off by lying down on the board to ride a wave, this is called Prone riding.  This gives you all the experience of catching a wave and learning the feel of where to position your weight and also how to steer the board once you’re on a wave.

Once you have perfected catching a wave then comes the bit that everyone wants – standing up!!  With all our years of experience we have plenty of tips and tricks to enable you to progress to your feet as quick as possible.  Our coaches can pick up on the slightest mistake and advance you past that and onto your feet in no time!

“Excellent surfing lessons. Really helpful instructors, hints, tips and advice. Lots of time in the water and lots of fun! Highly recommend.”

Myself and my 9 daughter did the introduction to surfing 2 hour session. Great instruction and help from Tia for both of us. Well organised and friendly. Would definitely do it again. Widemouth Bay is a beautiful setting too.

Simon B

Excellent experience and our instructor Tia was super patient and helpful. Lesson was broken down into easy stages and at no time did we feel rushed. Definitely learned some things to help in the future.

Brian L

“First time surfers, but we loved every second! Even managed to stand pretty quick. Wish we had time for a few more lessons but definitely a new passion. Thank you!!!!”

Jace Evans

Fantastic instructors! All 3 of our girls managed to stand up within their first 2hour lesson! girls thoroughly enjoyed it!

Mrs Howes

We have had a few lessons over the years but we are essentially novices and we found the tuition given by Tia to be very good and engaging. It was broken down into simple steps and pointers were given out in the water on what was needed to successfully stand up. Highly recommended.

Mr & Mrs Smith

Booked a lesson online for our son’s first time surfing. Booking process was easy, we were given a friendly greeting when we arrived and quickly set up with a wetsuit and board ready to start.
Our son found the lesson very informative and a good balance of land based teaching and practice in the water, he enjoyed it so much, we booked a further lesson before we went home.

Easy booking, friendly coaches, excellent tuition, and really good experience. Location is great, nice waves and lovely beach.

I went for my first ever surfing lesson at the age of 41 with my two children aged 13 & 15. We were in a group of 8 with Tia as our instructor. Tia was very informative, and knowledgeable and helped us all relax. We had some practice on the sand and plenty of time in the water. I would recommend this to anyone looking to try surfing for the first time or trying to improve. I felt safe and was able to get advice after I nose dived off the end of my board more than once in the water!!!! Each of our group manage to get up on the board, which was great: the surf wasn’t brilliant and we had intermittent waves but that can’t be helped. The surf school were excellent, well organised and efficient, providing great opportunities for new experiences for all!

My daughter had a great lesson and her instructor was clear and patient. Great location and big waves too!

John P

“Excellent surf lesson for both kids and adults! We just finished a lesson and thoroughly enjoyed the afternoon. As a group of 4 – Mum, Dad and 2 boys aged 8 & 10, we were a bit worried about it suiting all of us but there was no need – The instructor was great and made sure everyone was getting the most out of the lesson, even us oldies. The equipment and organisation were really good and we would highly recommend it to anyone wanting to give surfing a try.”

Equipment? We've Got You.

We provide all the specialist equipment; we have a great selection of Softech surfboards that are ideal for learning to surf on, they are wide and have plenty of volume. Staying warm is also important, we know if you are cold you won’t be enjoying your session.  We make sure of this no matter what time of the year as we use Gul wetsuits and can supply gloves and boots for either end of the year. When you are warm and on the right surfboard learning to surf is a breeze.

group riding the wave during a beginner surf lesson at Widemouth Bay

We meet at the OA surf club beach base which is in Widemouth Bay car park (EX23 0AH) Our trailers are opposite the lifeguard hut in the middle of the car park.  We will have some flags and banners up so you can spot us easily.

Widemouth Bay is a fabulous location to learn to surf, it has consistent waves that are perfect for beginners but also great for perfecting your manoeuvres.  Widemouth Bay is close to Bude but just far enough away to escape the crowds.  It is a long open, sandy beach that has plenty of space for everyone and is a blue flag winner for water quality and facilities.
