Bossiney Cove: A Hidden Gem in Tintagel
Nestled along the dramatic North Cornwall coastline near the legendary village of Tintagel, Bossiney Cove is a stunning, secluded beach- known for its golden sands, towering cliffs, and breathtaking natural beauty. Despite its incredible beauty, it's often overlooked in favour of the more famous Tintagel Castle and nearby beaches. Therefore, Bossiney Cove remains a hidden gem, perfect for those seeking tranquility and unspoiled coastal scenery.
A Scenic Coastal Escape
Bossiney Cove is tucked away beneath high cliffs, accessible via a steep but rewarding footpath from the coastal road. At low tide, the cove reveals a wide expanse of soft sand, perfect for sunbathing and exploring. When the tide is high, much of the beach disappears. Leaving just a small patch of sand and a rugged shoreline shaped by the Atlantic’s relentless waves.
One of the cove’s most striking features is the Elephant Rock- a natural archway in the cliffs. From certain angles, it resembles an elephant’s head and trunk, thus earning its title! This impressive rock formation has become a favourite spot for photographers and nature lovers.
Wild Swimming and Coasteering
The cove’s crystal-clear waters and sheltered location make it an excellent spot for wild swimming. While the waves can sometimes be strong, on calm days, the sea is inviting, offering a refreshing dip against the backdrop of dramatic cliffs. The nearby rock pools and caves provide plenty to explore, particularly at low tide.
For the more adventurous, Bossiney Cove is also a fantastic place for coasteering. The rugged cliffs and hidden sea caves make it an exciting location for scrambling, cliff jumping, and swimming along the coastline. Guided coasteering tours from nearby activity centres, such as us here at OA Surf Club, use Bossiney Cove as our primary route.
Walking and Exploring the Surrounding Area
Bossiney Cove is located along the South West Coast Path, making it a great stop for hikers exploring the coastline. A short walk from the cove leads to Rocky Valley, a dramatic gorge with ancient rock carvings and a scenic stream that flows into the sea. Another nearby attraction is St. Nectan’s Glen, a mystical woodland valley featuring a stunning waterfall that has long been associated with local legends.
The legendary Tintagel Castle, linked to King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table, is just a mile away. Visitors to the area can easily combine a visit to Bossiney Cove with a trip to the castle ruins, crossing the spectacular footbridge that spans the cliffs.
Tides and Accessibility
One important factor to consider when visiting Bossiney Cove is the tide times. The beach is only accessible at low tide, and it’s essential to check tide schedules in advance to avoid being cut off by the incoming sea. The steep footpath leading down to the cove can be challenging, making it less suitable for those with mobility issues.
There are no facilities at the cove itself, so visitors should come prepared with food, water, and any essentials they may need. The nearest parking is available in Bossiney village, a short walk from the coastal path leading down to the beach.
A Peaceful Retreat Off the Beaten Path
Bossiney Cove offers a peaceful alternative to Cornwall’s busier beaches, making it an ideal spot for those looking to escape the crowds and immerse themselves in nature. Whether you’re looking for a quiet place to relax, an adventurous spot for coasteering and swimming, or a scenic stop on a coastal hike, this hidden cove near Tintagel is a must-visit destination on Cornwall’s rugged northern coast.
