How to Choose your first Surfboard
Thinking about learning to surf? Great choice. Surfing is an exciting, rewarding sport that can stay with you for life. One of the biggest decisions you’ll make as a beginner is choosing your first surfboard, and getting this right can make a huge difference to how quickly you progress and how much fun you have in the water. The best board for you will depend on factors like your age, confidence, and ability. In this guide, we’ll walk you through everything you need to know to choose your first surfboard with confidence.
Children (Ages 4-9)
If you're introducing your child to surfing, it's important to start with a board that is small enough for them
to handle. Look for a soft-top board that is around 5-6 feet long, with a width of around 18-20 inches. These boards are designed to be stable and easy to paddle, making them ideal for kids who are just starting out. Soft-top boards also have a soft foam exterior that will help protect your child if they fall off.
Pre-teens and teenagers (Ages 10-18)
As your child grows older and gains more experience, they can move up to a board that is slightly longer and narrower. Look for a board that is around 6-7 feet long, with a width of around 20-22 inches. These boards will be more manoeuvrable and easier to turn, making it easier for your child to catch waves and progress their surfing skills.
Young adults (Ages 18-25)
If you're a young adult just starting out in surfing, you'll want to look for a board that is around 7-8 feet long, with a width of around 21-23 inches. These boards will provide you with the stability you need to catch waves, while still being manoeuvrable enough to help you progress your skills.
Adults (Ages 26-64)
As an adult beginner, you'll want to look for a board that is slightly longer and wider than the boards recommended for young adults. Look for a board that is around 8-9 feet long, with a width of around 22-24 inches. These boards will provide you with the stability you need to catch waves, while also being manoeuvrable enough to help you progress your skills.
Seniors (Ages 64+)
If you're a senior just starting out in surfing, you'll want to look for a board that is around 9-10 feet long, with a width of around 23-25 inches. These boards will provide you with the stability you need to catch waves, while also being easy to paddle and turn. Look for a board that is lightweight and easy to carry, as you may need to carry it further than younger surfers.
Choosing your first surfboard is an important step in your surfing journey. With the right board for your age and ability, you’ll progress more quickly, feel more confident in the water, and enjoy every wave that little bit more.
