How to Choose your first Surfboard

If you're thinking about taking up surfing, congratulations! Surfing is an exciting and challenging sport that will provide you with a lifetime of enjoyment. One of the most important decisions you'll need to make as a beginner surfer is choosing your first surfboard. However, the type of board that's best for you will depend on your age and skill level. In this blog post, we'll go through how to choose your first surfboard.

Children (Ages 4-9)

If you're introducing your child to surfing, it's important to start with a board that is small enough for them to handle. Look for a soft-top board that is around 5-6 feet long, with a width of around 18-20 inches. These boards are designed to be stable and easy to paddle, making them ideal for kids who are just starting out. Soft-top boards also have a soft foam exterior that will help protect your child if they fall off.

Pre-teens and teenagers (Ages 10-18)

As your child grows older and gains more experience, they can move up to a board that is slightly longer and narrower. Look for a board that is around 6-7 feet long, with a width of around 20-22 inches. These boards will be more manoeuvrable and easier to turn, making it easier for your child to catch waves and progress their surfing skills.

Young adults (Ages 18-25)

If you're a young adult just starting out in surfing, you'll want to look for a board that is around 7-8 feet long, with a width of around 21-23 inches. These boards will provide you with the stability you need to catch waves, while still being manoeuvrable enough to help you progress your skills.

Adults (Ages 26-64)

As an adult beginner, you'll want to look for a board that is slightly longer and wider than the boards recommended for young adults. Look for a board that is around 8-9 feet long, with a width of around 22-24 inches. These boards will provide you with the stability you need to catch waves, while also being manoeuvrable enough to help you progress your skills.

Seniors (Ages 64+)

If you're a senior just starting out in surfing, you'll want to look for a board that is around 9-10 feet long, with a width of around 23-25 inches. These boards will provide you with the stability you need to catch waves, while also being easy to paddle and turn. Look for a board that is lightweight and easy to carry, as you may need to carry it further than younger surfers.

Choosing your first surfboard is an important decision that will impact your surfing experience. By selecting the right board for your age and skill level, you'll be able to progress your skills and enjoy the sport to the fullest.
