Surf Boarding, Wave Surfing or Surfing? Use the right Lingo

27th February 2025

Guide

When you picture catching waves at Widemouth Bay, it’s easy to get swept up in the excitement of surf, sea, and sunshine. However, whether you're a beginner or a seasoned wave rider, the terminology around the sport can sometimes be a bit confusing. Should you call it surf boarding, wave surfing, or just plain surfing? Let’s break down the lingo to make sure you’re speaking like a true surfer.

What’s in a Name? Surf Boarding vs. Wave Surfing

At first glance, 'surf boarding' and 'wave surfing' might seem like accurate ways to describe what happens on the water. Both terms involve riding waves on a board, balancing, and gliding through the surf. However, while they might sound correct, neither of these is the preferred term in the surfing world. The universally accepted term for this exhilarating water sport is simply 'surfing'.

Why Not ‘Surf Boarding’?

The term 'surf boarding' might seem logical—after all, you are on a board in the surf. The word 'surfboard' itself is entirely correct when talking about the equipment, but the action of riding waves is not called 'surf boarding. Don’t worry, though! At OA Surf Club, our friendly instructors are more than happy to help you get the terminology—and your technique—just right.

And What About ‘Wave Surfing’?

Similarly, 'wave surfing' is a term that occasionally crops up, but it’s somewhat redundant. Surfing by nature involves waves, so specifying 'wave surfing' is unnecessary. In fact, you won’t hear many experienced surfers using this term. The simplicity of 'surfing' is what makes it fit so well—no extra words needed.

The Right Term: Surfing

Whether you are a shortboarder, longboarder, or trying a soft-top board for the first time, what you are doing is called surfing. The term encompasses all styles, skill levels, and experiences on the waves. At OA Surf Club, we make sure our students not only learn how to surf safely and effectively but also become familiar with the culture and language of the surfing community.

Why Does Correct Terminology Matter?

You might wonder why it’s important to use the correct term—after all, the ocean doesn't care what you call it! However, using the right terminology helps you integrate smoothly into the local surf culture. Speaking the same language as other surfers, whether here at Widemouth Bay or at beaches worldwide, can help you connect with the community and build confidence in your surfing journey.
